The Buffalo State College Hazing Research Collection

nuwerHank Nuwer

In 2006 the wonderful Buffalo State Library team of Vice President Maryruth Glogowski and archivist Dan DiLandro
took on the workload of beginning the nation's first archies and collection of scholarly books and articles on the
topic of hazing in Greek life, high schools, the military, international societies, medical intern training, and occupations
(firefighters, police, restaurant workers, industrial, etc.).  In time, I trust, it may be feasible to add materials on gang initiations
to the collection.

How can this help me, you ask?  If you are an undergraduate student doing a senior thesis or a graduate student or book
researcher (Higher Education, Popular Culture, Psychology, Sociology, Law Enforcement) doing research on hazing,
you will find a small but increasingly important Hazing Collection at Buffalo
State College Special Collections awaiting your inspection for no charge during regular Special Collections hours.
In return, after you write your work, please make
one extra copy of your unpublished or published original
research and donate it to the Library.

2)  If you are one of the parents or interested citizens who have inquired about donating funds for hazing research,
consider sending your contribution to the Hazing Collection to purchase expensive research books and materials
such as doctoral dissertations. The first besides myself to donate was
Dan Bureau, Campuspeak's hazing Hero for 2007, who donated his research and some from Campuspeak that had been
developed by the Association of Fraternity Advisers Hazing Taskforce. Thank you, Dan.  In 2007 I
have pledge another $1,000 to the library collection. Please consider matching that donation to BSC's Research
Collection
by earmarking your donation to The Hazing Collection.

The address for contributions of money or research materials is Maryruth Glogowski, Buffalo State Library Special
Collections, Butler Library, 1300 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York 14222.

Thank you for your consideration. And special thanks to BSC's Maryruth and Dan for making this long-overdue
effort happen. It is my hope that other educational institutions will devote library space to hazing research materials to
eradicate a
problem that goes back centuries and has no place in supposed centers for civility and knowledge.

[In 1999] Mr. Nuwer established a special collection of signed first editions of books authored by those he encounters as he writes professionally. This also includes some selected correspondence and memorabilia. He did this to honor one of his treasured professors, Fraser Drew, and a late classmate. He actively builds this collection each year. He also frequently signs over his stipends and honoraria recognizing that libraries need operational funds to support special collections.

Last spring we collaborated to create the Hank Nuwer Hazing Collection. This comprises published an unpublished material on hazing, some from families of victims. It is growing and is envisioned as the premiere research archive in the United States on hazing.

It was wonderful to have met you and to thank you in person for your
amazing past gifts to the College.  These are so often used by students
and researchers, and have been received by them with nothing but
amazement and gratitude.

And now, of course, we have to thank you for the Hank Nuwer Hazing
Collection. I'm thrilled by this gift and its functioning as a platform
for the collection overall.  It's...well, it's perfect!

Second Message:

Thank you so much for this as well as the materials by the Association of Fraternity Advisors, CAMPUSPEAK and other groups and organizations via Dan Bureau.  This latter material was received this week and will find a good home in the Hazing Collection.  As I hope you know, we cannot thank you enough for this material.  It will undoubtedly be heavily used for information and research.

Best from the Buffalo State College Archives!
