“That’s a lot of schools to be shutting down Greek life all together at one time,” said Hank Nuwer, a journalism professor at Franklin College in Indiana who has been researching hazing deaths since the 1970s.
“There was such defensiveness, and the big words being used were these were ‘unfortunate accidents’ and ‘isolated incidents,’” said Nuwer, whose book, Hazing: Destroying Young Lives, is due out early next year. “That can’t happen now because there’s careful attention to minute-by-minute accounts.”

The mother of the Louisiana State University student who died following an apparent hazing incident at a fraternity said she believes her son was murdered, telling ABC News, “Nobody can physically drink that much, you can’t, you have to be forced.”
“This shouldn’t have happened,” Rae Ann Gruver said in an exclusive interview with ABC News’ Amy Robach three months after her son, Max Gruver, 18, died following a night of drinking and alleged hazing at the Phi Delta Theta fraternity’s LSU chapter.

Greek life – at least most of the affiliated social activity – is temporarily on hold at the University of New Mexico.
With three UNM fraternities already in “emergency suspension” following allegations of hazing or alcohol policy violations, administrators have ordered a two-month halt to most social events within the university’s larger Greek system.
The “social restriction” continues through Feb. 19, according to a Dec. 8 memo to the fraternity and sorority chapters from Vice President of Student Affairs Eliseo “Cheo” Torres.
