Bio: Hank Nuwer is the Indiana-based
author of Broken Pledges: The Deadly Rite of Hazing, High School
Hazing,
Wrongs of Passage and The Hazing Reader. Other books of his
are on young-adult books on steroids, Olympian Jesse
Owens, and college sports recruiting issues.
His main focus now is a non-hazing project, a biography of Kurt
Vonnegut for Indiana University Press, a history of
hazing in the nineteenth cenury, and a young adult novel set in Nevada.
He plans to write a history of athletic hazing
(partially finished) as a social issue and a young adult novel
(partially finished) on high school athletic hazing. When younger he
enjoyed writing participatory articles in magazines
that found him on the losing end of stints as a minor league first
baseman, rodeo bullrider and discus thrower.
He teaches at Franklin College in Indiana. He speaks to various groups on hazing and at writer conferences on memoir,
nonfiction and writing for the web.
