September 2024: Named one of four “Champions for Kids” by the Alaska Children’s Trust.

2024: Continuing to have my scholarship in the behavorial sciences highlighted with media appearances on nationally known media programs such as Anderson Cooper, Chris Cuomo, ABC Home Show, ESPN, and one dozen full-length documentaries featuring hazing research. 2024: Celebrating nearly three decades of sharing my work in behavior studies, particularly hazing and binge drinking, to faculty, staff and students at more than 130 universities, including Cornell, Dartmouth, University of Illinois, Indiana University, University of Oregon, University of Southern California, and Florida A & M. 2022 lectures at Ohio State, University of Texas-Austin were my latest.

2024: A celebration of the 25th year since Buffalo State University’s Butler Library established the Hank Nuwer Collection with Nuwer’s book manuscripts, extensive correspondence with well-known authors, and memorabilia. In addition, BSU Special Collections now houses the Hank Nuwer Hazing Education Collection, the only archival collection devoted to keeping hazing scholarship and data on hand for scholarly research.

2020: Northeast Greek Adviser (NGLA) Association created the annual Hank Nuwer Award for excellence in student programming to combat campus hazing.

2018: Induction into Buffalo State University’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

2017 and 2007: Voted Franklin College Scholar of the Year by committee. Nominated three times as an outstanding adviser at Franklin College. Nominated three times as outstanding teacher at Franklin College. Received four research grants from F.C.

2013: Awarded a fellowship from the SUNY Buffalo State Anne Frank Project in a national competition. Performed my one-person play “A Broken Pledge.”

2011: A documentary on hazing that I, in part, narrated won the CINE Golden Eagle Award.

2010: Elected to Ball State University Journalism Hall of Fame.

2006 to present year: HazingPrevention.Org named its annual Antihazing Award the Hank Nuwer Antihazing Award. Winners have included nationally known activists Lianne Kowiak and Jim Piazza, as well as former NFL player Peyton Manning.

2006: Received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters as author and humanitarian, State University of New York. Commencement speaker for graduate students with main speaker Hillary Rodham Clinton speaking to undergraduates.

2004: Awarded third place, best essay from Fraternity Executives Association Board of Editors.

2003: New York State Public Library named “To the Young Writer” a “Recommended Young Adult Book of the Year” in ceremonies held in NYC.

2002: Society of Professional Journalists “Best Business Article,” Third Place. Investigative environmental journalism story on Alaska’s coal ash issues.

1999: Named Buffalo State University’s Outstanding Alumnus.

1989: Named College Media Advisers national outstanding student magazine adviser.

1989: Named one of top ten outstanding journalism professors by the Poynter Institute.

1988: Named Ball State University’s “Outstanding Professor” in national CASE competition; also named Ball State media adviser of year, 1988.

1988: Awarded Gannett Foundation research grant to research Broken Pledges: The Deadly Rite of Hazing.
