Settlement reached in the aftermath of Carson Stuckey (SAE) hazing death

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity headquarters reached a settlement with the family of 18-year-old Carson Starkey, who died of excessive alcohol consumption in 2008. Carson was a new member at the former chapter at Cal Poly.

The terms of the settlement are confidential.

According to autopsy results, Starkey died after suffering from Respiratory Arrest due to alcohol poisoning. An array of tests showed Starkey had a blood-alcohol level anywhere between .39 percent to .447 percent. Autopsy results also determined there were no signs of drug use.

He and his wife Gosia, recently of Union City, Ind., have owned 20 acres in Alaska for many years. “The move is a sort-of coming home for us,” said Nuwer.
