UAF Instructor notes

Lesson Plan: Current events.

  1. Blowback on home sale requirement has led to a brief pause by EPA

Department of Environmental Conservation also released a letter on Jan. 21 informing Fairbanks-area real estate professionals about new regulations starting Jan. 1, 2026, that will require homeowners to have an energy rating audit completed before a home changes hands.

The new regulation would also require homeowners to register all solid fuel-burning devices, such as wood and pellet stoves, that are installed in homes before being sold. DEC already requires that such devices older than 25 years or exceeding certain emission standards be rendered inoperable or removed before being sold.

Homeowners would be on the hook for the energy audit cost. Real estate agents would be required to inform buyers and sellers of the new regulations.

2) U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted last month that egg prices were likely to go up 20% this year. Even if shoppers can afford eggs, they may have difficulty finding them at times.

Briefly finish newspaper chapter

  • Attempts to gain circulation: penny press, Circulation wars. low cost subscriptions for one year with automatic renewal
  • More and more newspapers online.   Is the line blurring between what is online newspaper news and what is online radio news and online TV news?

Discussion:  PRO and CON.    Come up with both the pro and the con.  Should each state and the federal government subsidize failing community newspapers to keep more towns and cities from becoming news deserts? NOTE: This is an example of an essay question that could appear on the midterm.

  1. The Saturday Evening Post. (Closed for a few years) opened again about 55 years ago. Still publishes.

Pass out a copy:

The Saturday Evening Post was a weekly newspaper that began in Philadelphia in 1821. It was printed in time for delivery to Philadelphia addresses on Saturdays. The magazine covered a variety of topics, including business, law, science, and fashion.

The Saturday Evening Post is known for its high-quality content and for publishing many well-known authors, including Edgar Allan Poe, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Mark Twain. It was also the first magazine to include artwork on its cover.

The Saturday Evening Post’s most famous illustrator was Norman Rockwell, who captured the lives of ordinary Americans. Rockwell is considered by many to be one of America’s greatest artists.

While National Geographic is not completely folding, it is significantly scaling back its print magazine operations, transitioning to a largely freelance-based writing model and no longer offering newsstand purchases, indicating a major shift away from traditional print publication practices.

Key points about National Geographic’s changes:

  • Reduced print focus: The magazine has laid off many staff writers and is moving towards a freelance model.
  • No more newsstand sales: Starting in 2024, National Geographic will not be available on newsstands.
  • Digital emphasis: The company is focusing more on digital content and platforms.
  • National Geographic – Wikipedia

In September 2022, the magazine laid off six of its top editors. In June 2023, the magazine laid off all of its staff writers,
