Journalist Hank Nuwer tracks hazing deaths in fraternities and schools. Nuwer is the Alaska author of Hazing: Destroying Young Lives; Broken Pledges: The Deadly Rite of Hazing, High School Hazing, Wrongs of Passage and The Hazing Reader. In April of 2024 and April 2025 , the Alaska Press Club awarded him first place in the Best Columnist division.

He has written articles or columns on hazing for the Sunday Times of India, Toronto Globe & Mail, Harper's Magazine, Orlando Sentinel, The Chronicle of Higher Education and the New York Times Sunday Magazine. His current book is Hazing: Destroying Young Lives from Indiana University Press. He is married to Malgorzata Wroblewska Nuwer of Fairbanks, Alaska. Nuwer is a former columnist for the Greenville (Ohio)Early Bird and former managing editor of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner in Alaska.
Nuwer was named the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists columnist of the year in 2021 for his “After Darke” column in the Early Bird. He also won third place for the column in 2022 from the Indiana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He and his wife Gosia, recently of Union City, Ind., have owned 20 acres in Alaska for many years. “The move is a sort-of coming home for us,” said Nuwer. NBC News is launching a “Hazing in America” series

NBC News is launching a “Hazing in America” series across all platforms (NBC News, MSNBC, NBCNews.com and social media), using its collective presence to examine the state of the problem across college campuses.

This Monday, “TODAY” will feature a discussion on the plaza in its 8 a.m. hour withthe Piazza family, whose son died during a pledge event at Penn State University this year, as well as their lawyer. Reps. Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.) and Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), co-sponsors of the Report and Educate about Campus Hazing (REACH) Act, will also join the conversation.

“NBC Nightly News” and MSNBC will also dive into the issue with stories and special guests.

NBCNews.com will feature all content from the series, including an interactive map on each state’s hazing laws, original stories and videos. NBCNews.com will also livestream Monday’s “TODAY” plaza conversation.

More than 10,000 Americans participated in an NBC News|SurveyMonkey online poll about hazing on college campuses and whether it can be effectively eliminated. Poll results will be released Monday morning.

NBC News’ social media platforms will also feature content from “Hazing in America,” including custom Snaps with stories featuring victims of hazing.

The series will be promoted on NBC, including a promotional spot airing this Sunday evening during Sunday Night Football’s half-time and 4^th quarter.
