WHITMAN, Mass. — Five students were suspended after a hazing incident, Whitman-Hanson school officials said.NewsCenter 5’s Jim Boyd reported that the victim is a freshman member of the Whitman-Hanson track team.School officials said the incident happened last Wednesday as a group of male students was getting ready for after-school athletics.
Now that it is clear Limestone College officials and faculty will look for
alcohol serving (to a minor) only as the cause of the death of athlete Zach Dunlevy, there are no hazing deaths of athletes or Greeks to report in 2006.
It is a small but important victory since there are verifiable hazing incidents every year from 1970 to 2005.
2006 did have international deaths, including a recent reported fraternal death in the Philippines, however.
Now for 2007. Here’s to another death-from-hazing free year. And here’s hoping police and college administrators and emergency room doctors will conduct full investigations to rule out or to confirm hazing when “rookie” athletes are instructed to bring their own bottles to parties.
