In April of 2024 and April 2025 , the Alaska Press Club awarded him first place in the Best Columnist division.
He has written articles or columns on hazing for the Sunday Times of India, Toronto Globe & Mail, Harper's Magazine, Orlando Sentinel, The Chronicle of Higher Education and the New York Times Sunday Magazine. His current book is Hazing: Destroying Young Lives from Indiana University Press. He is married to Malgorzata Wroblewska Nuwer of Fairbanks, Alaska. EXCERPT FROM LETTER:
You’ve disgusted and disgraced a whole student body and perpetuated every stereotype that you don’t want us to have about Greeks — in case there was any doubt — that you’re immature and shouldn’t be trusted. I hope that the pledges get the respect of all their frat brothers, because they lost the respect of more than 30,000 fellow students. That doesn’t sound like a very fair trade.
I know many readers were incredibly offended by what happened last Wednesday, and you do have a chance to fight back. Students, stand up for yourself. Don’t let people and acts like this gnaw at the University’s integrity and credibility.
