Announcing a new hazing educational video for high school and colleges

I was proud to have a small role in it.

SEE THE TRUTH ABOUT HAZING

http://www.hrmvideo.com/

Hazing commonly involves physically abusive, emotionally degrading and/or sexually violating acts that are used as a way to initiate a person into a group. This program examines the growing surge of hazing incidents at high schools around the country, and distinguishes between different types of hazing practiced by girls and boys alike—brutal social humiliations, tortuous physical endurance ceremonies, online cyberbullying and more. Viewers hear from nationally-prominent authors on the topic as well as real-life victims who share their harrowing stories. Teens may not realize that hazing is not a harmless “rite of passage” but instead can be a degrading, damaging and illegal assault. Program discusses the code of silence that often keeps witnesses and participants from coming forth to stop the abuse. Interviews offer words of support for hazing victims and those who may be drawn into participating.

Needham parents won’t speak at meeting

Here is the story link to the Boston Globe and an excerpt from the Globe article.

At the last School Committee meeting, Mary Ellen Dunn, whose sophomore daughter is on the team, requested permission on behalf of the team’s parents to publicly present information related to the incident.

Dunn said parents are concerned that the soccer players’ civil rights may be violated if they are suspended. Dunn said that after she requested to present information at the committee meeting, Barr and Marianne Cooley, the committee’s vice-chair, offered to meet with her and other parents.

The parents met with Barr and Cooley, then with Superintendent Daniel Gutekanst, before the Thanksgiving break, said Dunn. She said she does not know whether the information she gave administrators has made an impact on the appeals process.

“We have provided them with all the information we have, including the information we have regarding the due process and civil rights violations that occurred with the suspensions,” said Dunn.

Dunn said the parents are not opposed to taking action against hazing behavior, but they believe the athletes should have had appeals before facing suspension. She said other punishments less harsh than suspension would have conveyed the message.

“We certainly agree they should investigate it, and there should be some consequences,” she said. “I would support a no tolerance message; every parent would, short of suspension from school.”

Valencia update: New Mexico investigation could take months

Link to News-Bulletin full story and a brief excerpt below

The investigation into the alleged sexual hazing incidents that led to the suspension of four senior players on the Valencia High football team could take two to three months to complete.

New Mexico State Police Lt. Eric Garcia said that investigators are interviewing victims, and will be interviewing witnesses and the suspects in the future.

Once these interviews are complete, then some might have to be re-interviewed to firmly establish the time and events of the allegations, Garcia said.

The whole process could take as much as two to three months, he said.

The four were suspended on Nov. 16, just four days before Valencia High School’s state football playoff game against Goddard, when a Los Lunas Schools police investigation determined that there was enough evidence to turn the case over to state police.

The allegations came to the attention of Los Lunas Schools upper administration on Nov. 9, and the sexual nature of the allegations that involved three underclassmen was established two days later.
